Bowing the Knee

“Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself; the word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath. He shall say, ‘Surely in the LORD I have righteousness and strength, to Him men shall come, and all shall be ashamed who incensed against Him. In the LORD all the descendants of Israel shall be justified, and shall glory (Isaiah 45:22-25).’”

A Dreadful Situation

*George Floyd on the fateful day of 25th May, 2020, died while under arrest in the custody of Minneapolis police officers. For eight minutes and forty eight seconds he lay handcuffed on the road as one officer, Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck, and others restrained him. During the first six minutes of restraint he repeatedly pleaded wth Chauvin to remove his knee as he couldn’t breathe. Then he became motionless and unresponsive, but Chauvin unrelentingly knelt upon his neck while other officers failed to intervene. Paramedics could not revive him. He had breathed his last.

The Response – A Call for Justice

There was a public outrage from the local community calling for justice, and there followed a world-wide protest championed by the Black Lives Matter movement, with people chanting the slogan, “I can’t breathe.”

A Dreadful Situation, Approximately 2000 Years Ago

‘When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified (Matthew 27:29-31).’

‘Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”

And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last (Mark 15:35-37).’

‘And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:8-11).’

The Response – A Call for People to be Filled with the Love of Christ

‘For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with the saints what is the width and length and depth and height – to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:14-19).’

The Final Situation and the Final Response – All Shall ‘Bow the Knee’

But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt to your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: “As I live, says the LORD, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us shall give an account of himself to God (Romans 14:10-12).’

Derek Chauvin will bow the knee and give an account of himself, along with all of us and George Floyd.
