The Commands of Jesus

It is fascinating to search the words of Jesus for discovering His direct commands to the world and to His followers. I have set them out below. This is not an exhaustive list, but the majority of them are there. So as not to overload you, I’ll start with The Gospel According to Matthew. More postings will follow with content from the other Gospels.

Matthew’s Gospel

Mathew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:34-37  “But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ ‘No’. For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”

Matthew 5:39-42 “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.”

Matthew 5:44 “But I say to you love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”

Matthew 5:48 “Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

Matthew 6:3 “But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”

Matthew 6:6-8 “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut the door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. But when you pray do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do no be like them. For Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.”

Matthew 6:16-18 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites with a sad countenance. ………..” but you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face …….”

Matthew 6:19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Matthew 6:31-34 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ ……… But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Matthew 7:1 “Judge not that you be not judged.”

Matthew 7:6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you into pieces.”

Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

Matthew 7:13 “Enter by the narrow gate, for wide is the gate that leads to destruction.”

Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:29, 30 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and My burden light.”

Matthew 28:19 “Go therefore and make disciples of the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
